The scorching sun burned above. No others, besides himself, sat beneath the bright orange star. No one was foolish enough to position themselves where it was hot enough to boil the carcass of the antelope. Perhaps in the Baya land had enough antelope, Katili’s pride would actually be with him to eat. But, like the past year, prey was scarce.
Katili, the king of the Baya pride, sat himself high above the savannah. Over looking his land, not only in search for either food or intruders, the king was also in search for his son. Impatiently, his massive paws scratched the rocky terrain with immense strength. Beneath his dark mane, which made him even more hot and more angered, eyes gazed upon the desert like savannah. His high quarters were positioned like rock, unable to be moved and too proud to admit he was greatly in need of shade. Instead, Katili’s tail twitched slightly behind him, giving the only hint the king was indeed hot.
Too proud to admit, what he saw as a weakness, Katili’s narrowed orbs scanned once more over the horizon. Whatever made him think his son was eligible for his kingdom was beyond him. Katili knew his son, only son, was far less than perfect. The wretched boy had always messed up and was never able to surpass Katili’s expectations. No one knew, except for the king, what happened to his mate. And they’ll probably never know.
The sun above was driving the bloodlust lion into rage. Already, the dark lion was tempted unleashing his anger on the cheetahs who laid not far. But already few in numbers, his mind warned him cheetahs were soon hard to come by. Jumping from his rocky throne and onto the sand, which altered beneath his weight, Katili made a few giant strides before becoming aware of someone near by. Their scent, not yet strong to tell who it was, Katili knew it was alive and coming towards him.

Niara bounded across the grass lands, she stopped momentarilly to catch her breath, as she stood there she looked around, she smiled as a bird called out then flew into the trees, she turned her gaze to the mountain side not far off, now who was that? she squinted her eyes against the sun, trying to make out the small ant like figure standing there, she then bounded towards the slopes, leaping effortlessly up rocks, she stopped as she caught a scent, she grinned happily daddy she thought, she ran up a slight slope, the bounded over another rock, landing softly on the sandy area where her father stood, she dipped her head to him, then went over to him and rubbed her head on his shoulder in greeting, she then stepped back and sat down, tail flicking back and forth, smile on her face

Katili, although not impressed with his daughter’s frolicking, gazed his deep orbs towards her. The king watched the princess, his princess, ran across the plain. He knew, which by the time the scent caught wind, it was his first and, really, only daughter. Unlike Ajay, who will disappoint him time and time again, Niara always obeyed him without argument and often exceeded his standards. Now if only, she was a he.
No emotions left his features, but when she dipped a proper greeting for a king, he acknowledged her with a shift of his body. Normally when those beneath him do not properly greet him, he’ll ignore until given the proper respect. Niara rubbed against him and though he won’t return the affection, Katili did set a giant paw to her muzzle. One would think this was odd behavior for a lion, none the less Katili, but it was his fatherly way keeping Niara happy.
“Have you completed the task I set you to do?” Katili asked coldly, now who regain composure and was looking into the eyes of his daughter. A few days ago, he asked Niara to prowl the perimeters of his land to take note of any changes or intruders. Now keeping his land safe was no easy task and Katili did that on his own. But often, he sent Niara to either keep his disloyal pride members in check or relocated prey onto his land. A task only he had Niara do.

Niara smiled as her fathers paw was placed on her face, she nodded once to his question "yes dad, i did, besides the war, which we seem to have won, nothing was out of the ordinary" she answered him, she knew her father was aware of the attack some of the Jema pride tried to carry out, and it seemed that the Baya's were too strong for them, many of the Jema bodies lay in the elephat graveyard, along with a few Baya's.
Naz shook out her pelt, little dust specks went flying out from her and seemed to shroud her in a mist for a few moments, "dad, what are you doing way up here?" she asked him, looking around the rocky mountain side, she hardly saw him up here, there must have been a good reason, maybe something important was meant to be happening

Katili was please when the news was spoken from his beloved daughter. Though he would keep such pet names to himself, and normally got angry with himself when he showed such compassion, Katili was proud nonetheless. The war was fun, Katili admitted to himself, a smirk formed along his jaw. Though bloodlust was a common emotion, it was particularly strong that very moment when discussing the recent war between Jema and Baya. Though only one or two Baya lions died, Katili did not mourned for them. But during that battle, Katili was more than having his share of fun striking down any of the Jema pride. He faintly remembered the one who lead them, a young male, which he was sure was dead like the rest.
"When the time is right, I will expect you to scout again." Katili responded or rather demanded, though his words were not harsh like usual. When his daughter asked why we was there, Katili only remained silent. But only for a few moments. He did not like being question and normally did not answer someone question. "Have you seen your useless and worthless step-brother?" Her father, the king asked, not necessarily responding to Niara’s question, but answering it with another question.
Katili only referred Ajay as a step brother, when it came to Niara. He expected the entire clan to know they were not related. Ajay was a failure, but his eldest son, which many others took off and began their own prides, that is if he did not kill them. Unfortunately, Ajay was the one who stayed behind and Katili overlooked him when he was a cub, or he would of killed him then.
"He," Katili outraged and impatient replied, not repeating Ajay’s name, "is becoming of age. If he cannot survive the training I have, he cannot be given the command of the Baya pride. Their future depends if he exceeds my standards or not. But I already know the outcome." The baya king told, knowing the end will result in failure.

I knew my father was looking for me, i sighed as i lay in the long grass on the plains out of sight, but whenever i go to see my father, she is always there, the perfect one, the one who he thinks really deserves to be heir, obviously i am talking about my sister... step-sister, we share the same father, Katili, but thats all we have in common, father drove my mother out for whatever reason, and Niara's got ill and died, either way, we were still both here. And then you have Simba, what he likes to call a minature version of my father, pfft, yeah right.
I let out another sigh and rose to my feet and stretched, time to go and face the music i suppose. I carefully picked my way up the path towards where my father and step-sister sat, i dipped my head to Naz, just out of respect, then i turned to my father and dipped my head to him, but i left my head there, looking at my paws in shame.

The shuffle of shame rang through Katili’s auds, which flickered slightly towards the noise. Without even a second glimpse, a second thought, the king had already knew it was the failure. He did not acknowledge his son, the way he had to Niara. Instead, Katili simply looked across the horizon as the young lion bowed before him. It wasn’t until Katili was sure his son felt shame, that the King shifted into a different position. His golden orbs glared at Fail, and knew his son was aware of the shame he brought.
Katili rose a paw towards the sky, ready to attack the son he did not want. But instead of slashing at the failure, the king slamed his paw at the ground, where dust rose in a cloud. Greedily, he refused to scar his only son because he needed his son well, healthy for the future training. Stiffly, he swore beneath his breathe, and walked passed Ajay. Without saying the words, Katili expected his son to follow, only to follow towards the training the king had in mind.

Niara was about to answer her father when the sound of heavy paws could be heard padding up the path, her ear flicked a little, she turned her head to see Fail heading towards them, she turned her head away and rolled her eyes, another day to get messed up, she dipped her head back to him, for no other reason than it was polite, as he sat there, head hung in shame, the corners of Naz's mouth lifted slightly, but she straightened her face when her father's paw came crashing down to the ground. She got up and turned, watching her father walk away, she then looked at Ajay, who she knew would follow after Katili, she turned her gaze back to her father, "I'll catch up with you later dad" she called after him, then added "more exploring to be done" she laughed a little to herself, then she happily bounded down the mountain side and ran across the plains, and then out of sight.

i caught Naz's smirk, i glared at her, but i obediently got to my feet and followed after my father, and then she called after him, i held back and angry growl, i hated the way she called him dad, i had always called him father, and she should know better, she was older than me, even if it was only a year difference. When ever i had called him dad in the past, he had always clipped me round the head with his paw, but with her, favouritism or what?
As i silently walked after my father i wondered where we were going, probably some where private so he can shout at me, or tell me off again. From the corner of my eye i saw Niara bounding off towards her favoutite place... the elephant graveyard. That place gave me the creeps, i didnt see what was so fun and enjoyable about it, especially now it was littered with remains from the war. I shook all the thoughts from my head and concentrated on keeping up with my father, i walked behind him in complete silence.

Katili remained silent, leaving no words for his son to hear. The air was still scorching and the sun was in high noon. A few more meters and the father and lowly son finally came to a deserted place. It was away from the pride’s normal activity areas and away from prying eyes. Katili, darkening his gaze, turned to his son and snarled his teeth at his next victim. That is right, Katili brought his son out here to face him. The Fail was a sad example of the lions and more rightfully should belong to the Jema pride instead of his own. The Jema pride, the one lead by his brother, were filled with sickening weak lions who could not handle their place on the battle field. Such an example the other day, when Katili lead his merciless fighters against a moronic lion trying to exact revenge. Katili flexed his muscles, sharp claws digging deep into the sand. Before taking his next breath, the lion king roar a beastly growl which was a challenge towards his pathetic son. “You will fight,” were the only words before Katili stroked in a giant leap landing besides his son. A thick cloud of dust encircled around him, most likely blinding his victim for a moment. A massive paw came high from the air and took the advantage, taking a hard blow towards the Failure.
